HERBERT B. POWELL. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Thomas L. Alford Jr./with all good wishes -/Herbert B Powell/General, US Army." B/w, 8x10 overall, image 7½x7¾ (one surface). Powell had originally written "Sr." before writing "Jr." over it. Four-Star General Herbert P. Powell (1903-1998) began his military career in the Oregon National Guard in 1919. During WWII, Powell was Chief of Staff of the 75th Infantry Division, and he commanded the 17th Infantry Regimental Combat Team in Korea. Powell, whose decorations include the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge, was later Commanding General of the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe before retiring from the military in 1963. He then served as U.S. Ambassador to New Zealand from 1963-1967. Powell is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Slightly creased at blank margins and corners and upper right background. Minor surface smudges (not evident head on). Fine condition.
