"New York, Oct. 26. 1903". Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton (1853-1947) was
a British General who served with distinction in several of Britain's
colonial wars: in India, Burma, Afghanistan, and both Boer Wars, knighted in
1902 for his success in the 2nd Boer War. However, he was assigned
much blame for the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of World War I (1915) and
removed from command, even though he had no part in planning the campaign
and was allotted insufficient men and equipment for the attack. Ironically, as a
military observer with the Japanese Army in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905),
he had seen first hand how modern weaponry would affect military campaigns, but
his recommendations for new strategies and tactics were ignored. Hamilton also
wrote poetry and a novel. In retirement, he worked for Anglo-German friendship,
even after Hitler's rise to power. Stray pencil erasures at lower section.
Lightly soiled. Edges irregulalry cut. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso.
Otherwise, fine condition.
