Typed Letter signed: "Ira C Eaker", as Deputy Commander, Army Air Forces, 1 p, 8x10½. On letterhead of Headquarters Army Air Forces. Washington, D.C., 1946 October 23. To David Bollinger, Cleveland, Ohio. In full: "Your letter of September 18th reached my office during my absence on leave, hence the delay in replying. I am honored by your request for my autographed photograph to be included in your collection, and am happy to enclose it herewith. From what you write of your collection, it must be quite an impressive one and I wish you every success in your goal to make it complete. Sincerely." EAKER made the first transcontinental flight purely on instruments (1936). On August 17, 1942, he led the first heavy bomber (B-17) attack on continental Europe, a raid on Rouen, France. In 1944, he was named Commander of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces. In 1970, Eaker was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
