Typed Letter Signed: "J Lawton Collins", 1p, 5¼x8¼. No place, 1981 July 2. To Robert P. Allen, Jr., Lewiston, Maine. In full: "Please forgive the long delay in my replying to your letter of November 15, 1980, but I have been troubled by a bad back and am way behind in my correspondence. I am enclosing a small autographed picture [not included] which I hope will serve your purpose. With best wishes, Sincerely," Major General Joseph Lawton Collins was Commander of the 25th Infantry Division which, in December 1942, landed as a relief force on Guadalcanal. He was part of General Omar Bradley's First Army in the Normandy assault as Commander of the VII Corps that spearheaded the breakout at St. Lô in July 1944. From 1949-1953, General Collins was Chief of Staff of the Army. ¼-inch vertical tear at blank upper edge. Fine condition.
