J. LAWTON COLLINS
J. Lawton Collins sends a letter saying that he does not wish to provide a quote for the new book coming out "War Crime Trials" written by H. Keith Thompson.
Typed Letter Signed: "J. Lawton Collins", 1p, 7¼x10¼. No place, 1959 August 7. To H. Keith Thompson, New York. In full: "Your letter of July 31 reference the possibility of quoting me in your coming book on 'War Crimes Trials' has been received. The more I have reflected on this matter, the more I'm persuaded to revert to my original feeling as indicated in my letter to you of August 20, 1957. As in many complicated problems such as this, there are many pros and cons with respect to those trials. I am not a lawyer and did not follow the trials in detail at the time, hence, I do not desire to have published any views which are purely personal and instinctive rather than based on any careful analysis of the subject. I'm sorry but this is my considered judgment. With best wishes for success of your book, Sincerely yours," In 1942, General COLLINS, as Commander of the 25th Infantry Division, landed as a relief force on Guadalcanal. He was part of General Omar Bradley's First Army in the Normandy assault as Commander of the VII Corps that spearheaded the breakout at St. Lô in July 1944, later serving as Chief of Staff of the Army (1949-1953). H. KEITH THOMPSON, a Yale graduate with a background in military and maritime law, was a specialist and researcher of war crimes trials. In addition to compiling a comprehensive private library on the subject, he co-authored the book, Dönitz at Nuremberg: A Reappraisal. Horizontal fold creases not at signature. Fine condition.
