Photograph signed "Jack Catton". B/w, 8x9¾ overall, 7½x9½ image, one surface, printed on cardstock. Photo by the U. S. Air Force, with photo credit stamped in black ink on verso. Catton (1920-1990) flew combat bomber missions in World War II and the Korean War and flew the first B-29 bomber groups across the Pacific Ocean to the Mariana Islands in 1944. He was also part of the first two atomic weapon tests during Operation: Crossroads at Bikini Atoll in 1946 and led the 92nd Bombardment Wing from Fairchild Air Force Base to Guam in its first tests of the B-36 bomber's ability to carry out sustained oversea operations. After commanding several squadrons and wings before assuming command of the 817th Air Division at Pease Air Force Base in July of 1959, which made him the youngest brigadier general in the U. S. Air Force. Catton retired from the Air Force as a general in 1974 after commanding several Air Force bases and went to work for Lockheed; he retired from there in 1984. Catton's son Jack, Jr. was also a major general in the Air Force before retiring in 2008. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Light impressions on image (not visible head-on). Light dents and paper loss along right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
