Printed Reproduction signed: "James A. Van Fleet", 1p, 8½x11. The front page of the July 27, 1953, issue of "The New York Times": "truce is signed, ending the fighting in korea;/p.o.w. exchange near; rhee gets u.s. pledge;/eisenhower bids free world stay vigilant". All articles on the page are legible. In the blank lower margin, a 15-cent stamp honoring the 50th anniversary of the Veterans Administration has been affixed next to an older 6-cent Eisenhower stamp. Both are postmarked Washington, DC, July 21, 1980, first day of issue. In April 1951, Lieutenant General Van Fleet was named to succeed General Matthew B. Ridgway as Commander of the Eighth Army in Korea. Ridgway had been named to succeed MacArthur as Allied Commander of the U.N. forces in the Far East. Van Fleet, promoted to General in July 1951, served until February 1953, when he was succeeded by General Maxwell D. Taylor. He retired the next month. Fine condition.
