Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Thomas L Alford Sr. with best wishes/J Michaelis/Lieut General". B/w, 8x10. Actual image 7½x8¾ with a white border (one surface). U.S. Army photograph, August 2, 1966, as Lieutenant General, Commanding General, Fifth U.S. Army. General John H. Michaelis (1912-1985) was a military veteran who served in the United States Army from 1936-1972. He served in WWII and the Korean War. He was named the United Nations Command Commander, the United States Forces Korea Commanding General, and the Eight United States Army General from 1969-1972. Michaelis' numerous decorations include two Silver Stars and the Distinguished Service Medal. During the Korean War, he told his regiment: "You're not here to die for your country. You're here to make those [so & so's] die for theirs". Michaelis is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Lightly creased lower left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
