JOHN J. PERSHING
General tells Senator he cannot attend bridge opening.
TLS: "John J. Pershing", 1p, 7¼x10½.
Washington, 1928 October 15. To Senator Simeon D. Fess, Cambridge,
Ohio. In full: "Thank you very much or your telegram urging my
acceptance of the invitation extended me to be present at the opening of St.
Mary's Bridge. I deeply appreciate your interest and wish that I might send you
a favorable reply, but the fact is my plans for the next few weeks make it quite
impracticable. Again thanking you, and with cordial good wishes and kindest
regards always." SIMEON D. FESS (1861-1936) represented Ohio in the
U.S. Senate as a Republican from 1923-1935. This letter was written three
weeks before Fess was reelected. JOHN J. PERSHING (1860-1948) commanded the
American Expeditionary Forces during WWI. After the war, he was promoted
permanent General of the Armies of the United States. Pershing received the 1932
Pulitzer Prize in History for My Experiences in the World War. Lightly
creased and rippled. Shaded at margins. Chipped at blank upper edge. Overall,
fine condition.
