Photograph inscribed and signed: "To the McKim's with my devoted friend-/ship and admiration/John L. Hines/Major General US Army". B/w, 11x13½. John L. Hines (1868-1968) served in Cuba in the Spanish-American War, and then in the Philippines battling the independence movement there. He was adjutant to General Pershing during the Mexican Punitive Expedition (1916-1917). During World War I, Hines leaped four grades in rank in 16 months, rising from major to major general. He commanded the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the AEF in France, before taking command of the 4th Division in August 1918. He led his Division through the St Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne campaigns. He was the US Army's Chief of Staff (1924-1926), and before retiring in 1932 commanded US forces in the Philippines. He was one of only 3 US generals to celebrate his 100th birthday. Lightly toned. Signature light but legible. Surface damages near top edge. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
