JOHN POPE
ALS: "Jno. Pope", 1 page, 7¾x9¾. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1870 August 1. On letterhead of Headquarters, Department of the Missouri. In full: "On my return from the Plains day before yesterday I received your note of the 11th inst. Forwarded to me from [illegible]. Be pleased to accept my thanks for your thoughtful kindness. Mrs. Pope is at [illegible] but I hope to go for her about Sept. 1. When she last wrote the [illegible] you sent had just been received, but as she intended to send it here I was not informed. I will be glad always to see you here where I suppose I shall remain for some years. The rail-road to [illegible] will be completed this month & [illegible] will be necessary. Very truly yours." Docketed on verso. John Pope fought with distinction at Monterrey and Buena Vista in the Mexican War. As Commander of the Army of the Mississippi in the Civil War, he captured New Madrid and took part in the move on Corinth. These successes in the West brought him the command of the newly organized Army of Virginia (June 1862), and he was named Brigadier General in the regular army. He was defeated by Lee at the Battle of Second Manassas, however, and transferred to Minnesota. Promoted to Major General in 1882, Pope retired in 1886. Vertical fold crosses signature. Slightly soiled. Pinhead-sized spots at upper left corner. Overall, fine condition.
