Typed Letter signed: "John R. Hodge", 1 page, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1947 February 28. On letterhead of the Plans and Operations Division, War Department General Staff. To Ashley T. Cole, New York, N.Y. In full: "I have received your letter of February 19, requesting that I autograph my picture for your work. If you will send the photograph to me at 808 South Illinois Avenue, Carbondale, Illinois, I shall be glad to oblige you. Very truly yours". Ink note (unknown hand) in right margin. John Reed Hodge (1893-1963) entered the US Army in 1917 and served in France during World War I. As a brigadier general, he led troops during the Pacific campaigns on Guadalcanal (1942) and Bougainville (1943-1944). Promoted to major general, he participated in the liberation of the Philippines. In 1945, by now a major general, he was on Okinawa and took command of the XXIV Corps. He accepted the Japanese surrender in Korea, and was military governor of that nation until 1948. In 1950 he took command of the Third Army, but did not return to Korea. He earned his fourth star in his final assignment, Chief of Army Field Services (1952-1953). Two horizontal mailing folds. Lightly creased with corners creased. Pencil note (unknown hand) at center right edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
