Commanding General of Mexico, 1p, 6x8. Mexico (City), 1841 December
20. In Spanish, not translated. Making an appointment of a military
nature. José Vicente Miñón (1802-1878) was Commander in Chief at the
"Comandancia General de Mexico." In 1841, Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar sent
out an expedition (Santa Fe Expedition of 1841), desiring to divert at least
part of the trade then carried over the Santa Fe Trail to Texas. Members of
this expedition were captured by Mexico in early December. A week after this
letter was written, Capt. Estevan Dias and his military body arrived at
Mexico City escorting the Texan prisoners from near present day Tucumcari, New
Mexico. Five years later, General Miñón fought against the Americans during
the Mexican War and later supported Emperor Maximilian. Nicked left edge.
Tape remnant at lower left corner of verso shows through to two words of the
addressee. Overall, fine condition.
