LAURIS NORSTAD. Commemorative Sheet signed: "Lauris Norstad/Gen [illegible]", 8½x11. Reproduction of the front page of the "Virginian-Pilot", Norfolk, Va., Friday, December 18, 1903, with banner headline: "Flying Machine Soars 3 Miles in Teeth of High Wind Over/Sand Hills and Waves at Kitty Hawk on Carolina Coast". A 31-cent airmail stamp picturing the Wright Brothers and their flying machine is affixed, postmarked Dayton, OH, September 23, 1978. After taking part in the North Africa campaign in 1942-1943, Lauris Norstad became Chief of Staff of the 20th Air Force under General Hap Arnold's direct command. Promoted to Major General in June 1945, Norstad had direct responsibility for planning the atomic bomb missions carried out over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. As Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1956-1963), he served as Commander of NATO forces. Fine condition.
