Lewis B. Hershey, the oldest active military man in the United States when he retired, signed this album page to radio host George Sanders "With every best with out obligation". Also signed by the Socialist Labor Party of America's presidential and vice presidential candidates for 1960.
Autograph note signed "To George Sanders/With every best with out obligation/Lewis B Hershey/Director of Selection Service." and, on verso, "Eric Hass/Presidential candidate/Socialist Labor Party - 1960"and "Georgia Cozzini/Candidate for Vice President/Socialist Labor Party - 1960", all in blue ink. With blue ink notations in unknown hand. 1 page, 7¾x10, with b/w magazine photos of Hershey and Cozzini. Radio host GEORGE SANDERS collected the autographs of celebrities interviewed on his show. LEWIS B. HERSHEY (1893-1977, born in Steuben City, Indiana) saw brief service in France, with the rank of Captain, in World War I. In October of 1940, Brigadier General Hershey was assigned to the staff of the newly created Selective Service System (Sept. 16, 1940) and in December was named Deputy Director. In July of 1941, he became Director of Selective Service, a post he held until February of 1970, except for the time between his retirement in December of 1946, and his recall in January of 1947, and the few months between the expiration of the 1940 law in March of 1947, and the enactment of the peacetime draft a few months later. When Hershey retired in March of 1973, at the age of 79, he was the oldest man on active status. ERIC HASS (1905-1980) was an author and four-time Socialist Labor Party of America candidate for United States president. GEORGOA COZZINI (1915-1983) was the first woman to run for Governor of Wisconsin, running in 1942, 1970 and 1974. She was also the Socialist Labor Party of America's vice presidential candidate in 1956 and 1960.Lightlytoned, soiled and creased. Lightly discolored from other photos.
