postal rate
First day cover signed: "Louis H Wilson/general U.S. Marine
Corps/26th Commandant" in black felt. 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring the
11c Regular Postage Rate, postmarked Washington, District of Columbia, June 15,
1961. 11c stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Louis Hugh Wilson, Jr.
(1920-2005) was the 26th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving
from 1975 until his retirement in 1979. Upon his retirement, Wilson was awarded
the Distinguished Service Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), one of many
honors he would receive for his service over his career, which spanned WWII, the
Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Wilson received the Medal of Honor
for leading Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines at the battle of Guam (July
25-26, 1944), defeating a superior enemy force. Later, he would receive the
Legion of Merit and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with
Gold Star for his service in Vietnam. Toned. Corners rounded. Lightly
creased throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
