LUCIUS D. CLAY
Lucius D. Clay sends a typed letter of encouragement to an autograph seeker.
Typed Letter Signed: "Lucius D. Clay", 1p, 6½x8½ with an unsigned oval, b/w, 4½x6½ photo matted to 15x11. New York, New York, 1967 May 2. To Morris Cotkin, Brooklyn, New York. In full: "I think autographs come from writing letters to those whose signatures you seek and getting a signed reply. Letters and documents, if of any interest, usually are given to libraries. I wish you good luck in your quest." General Lucius D. Clay (1897-1978) served as Deputy Military Governor (1945-1947) and Military Governor (1947-1949) of the American Zone in occupied Germany. He oversaw the Berlin Airlift from June 28, 1948 to May 12, 1949. After the Berlin Wall was built in August 1961, President Kennedy sent General Clay as his Personal Representative, with the rank of Ambassador, on a mission to Berlin that lasted until September 1962. Letter is lightly creased. Mat shows tape at blank margins. Matted, not in Gallery of History style. Not reviewed by us for conservation integrity. "As is" matting purchase.
