General Lyman L. Lemnitzer filled out and signed his personal check in 1959
Check filled out and signed: "L.L. Lemnitzer", in blue ink. 8¼x3, Honesdale, PA., 19 January 1959. Check No. 4027, drawn on The Honesdale National Bank, payable to Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. in the amount of $7.30. Lyman L. Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the 34th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and soon received appointment as Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower in London. After aiding in the planning of the North African invasion, he resumed command of the 34th in February of 1943 and led it in the opening phases of General Patton's Sicilian Campaign. In late June 1943, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Allied 15th Army Group (U.S. 7th, British 8th) under General Sir Harold R.L.G. Alexander. He was promoted to Major General in November 1944. In 1952 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and General in 1955 when he was named Commander of U.S. Army Forces in the Far East and of the 8th Army. After the war, Lemnitzer was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-1963) and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (1963-1969). Bank processing stamps on front and verso - affecting signature at first "L". Lightly soiled. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
