GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER
1980 first day cover reproduction of the Dec. 8, 1941 front page of the New York Times reporting the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, signed by General Lyman L. Lemnitzer. He was Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II.

Reproduction of the first page of the Dec. 8, 1941 issue of The New York Times with three-line banner headline: "Japan Wars on U.S. and Britain;/Makes Sudden Attack on Hawaii;/Heavy Fighting at Sea Reported". Whole page legible. Postmarked Washington, DC, July 21, 1980. 1-cent 1945 FDR stamp affixed with new 15-cent Veterans Administration stamp affixed. FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Lyman L. Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the 34th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and soon received appointment as Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower in London. After aiding in the planning of the North African invasion, he resumed command of the 34th in February of 1943 and led it in the opening phases of General Patton's Sicilian Campaign. In late June 1943, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Allied 15th Army Group (U.S. 7th, British 8th) under General Sir Harold R.L.G. Alexander. He was promoted to Major General in November 1944. In 1952 he was promoted to Lieutenant General and General in 1955 when he was named Commander of U.S. Army Forces in the Far East and of the 8th Army. After the war, Lemnitzer was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-1963) and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (1963-1969). Lemnitzer was awarded numerous military awards and decorations during his service, including but not limited to: Parachutist Badge, Army Distinguished Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit degree of Officer (awarded by mistake but not rescinded by FDR during World War II), Legion of Merit degree of Legionnaire, Presidential Medal of Freedom (Awarded by President Reagan, June 23, 1987), American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with two campaign stars), World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (with two service stars), Honorary Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (Great Britain), Honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Great Britain), Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Italy), Grand Cross of the Order of the Crown of Italy (Italy), Grand Cross of the Military Order of Italy (Italy), Grand Cross of the Légion d'Honneur (France), Médaille militaire (France), Croix de Guerre with Palm (France), Bundeswehr Cross of Honour in Gold (Germany), Grand Officer of the Order of Boyaca (Colombia), Grand Cordon First Class of the Order of the Rising Sun (Japan), Medalha de Guerra (Brazil), Grand Official of the Order of Military Merit (Brazil), Order of Military Merit Teaguk (Korea), Order of Military Merit Teaguk with Gold Star (Korea), Gold Cross of Merit with Swords (Poland), Knight Grand Cross of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant (Thailand), Medal for Military Merit, First Class (Czechoslovakia), Royal Order of the White Eagle, Class II (Yugoslavia), Grand Star of Military Merit (Chile), Order of Menelik II (Ethiopia), United Nations Korea Medal, and a Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
