GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER
General Lyman L. Lemnitzer signed this letter to an autograph hunter in 1983. He was Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower during World War II.
Typed letter signed "L.L. Lemnitzer" as a retired general in the U. S. Army in blue ink. 1 page, 6¾x8¼. Feb. 10, 1983. Addressed to Steve Juscik, Merrillville, Indiana. In full: "Dear Mr. Jusick, thank you for your letter of 28 January 1983 - I very much appreciate your kind and generous remarks regarding my military service. As requested in your letter, I have signed the note card you enclosed in your letter and I am returning it herewith [not enclosed] together with an autographed photograph as you requested [not enclosed]. I send them to you with my best wishes for your success in starting an autograph collection of Wrold War II military leaders. With warm regards. Sincerely,". In June of1942, Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the 34th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and soon received appointment as Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower in London. After aiding in the planning of the North African invasion, he resumed command of the 34th in February of 1943 and led it in the opening phases of General Patton's Sicilian Campaign. In late June 1943, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Allied 15th Army Group (U.S. 7th, British 8th) under General Sir Harold R.L.G. Alexander. He was promoted to Major General in November 1944. After the war, Lemnitzer was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-1963) and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (1963-1969). Fine condition.
