General Lyman L. Lemnitzer signed this letter in 1983 about his work on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Monument at West Point. Accompanied by an unsigned photocopy of the monument. Lemnitzer was Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under Eisenhower during World War II.
Typed letter signed "L.L. Lemnitzer" as a retired general in the U. S. Army in blue ink. 1 page, 6¾x8½. June 21, 1983. Addressed to Lori Kaye, Seaford Harbor, New York. In part: "Dear Lori, As you requested in your note of 30 May 1982, I have autographed the six (6) documents you enclosed in your letter [not enclosed] and am returning them herewith. I send them to you and your brother with my best wishes. During the past two years I have been the Chairman of the Eisenhower Monument Committee which was assigned the task of designing, building and establishing an Eisenhower monument at West Point. The Dedication Ceremony was held at West Point on 3 May 1983. A copy of the Dedication Program in enclosed [not enclosed]. I am also enclosing a Xerox copy of a photograph of the monument for your collection. You may be interested in learning that the inscription on the rear of the pedestal includes the first three sentences of the Order of the Day: Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force: You are about to embark upon a Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. With warm regards. Sincerely". Lightly toned, otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned photocopy. B/w, 1 page, 8½x11. Photocopy of the Dwight D. Eisenhower monument at West Point. Facsimile signature: "L. L. Lemintzer/General, U.S. Army". Captioned: "Association of Graduates/Assembly/United States Military Academy/June 1983". Lightly toned. Photocopy marks. Caption is cut off at bottom edge. Otherwise in fine condition. In June of1942, Lemnitzer (1899-1988) was promoted to Brigadier General in command of the 34th Anti-Aircraft Brigade and soon received appointment as Assistant Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters under General Dwight D. Eisenhower in London. After aiding in the planning of the North African invasion, he resumed command of the 34th in February of 1943 and led it in the opening phases of General Patton's Sicilian Campaign. In late June 1943, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the Allied 15th Army Group (U.S. 7th, British 8th) under General Sir Harold R.L.G. Alexander. He was promoted to Major General in November 1944. After the war, Lemnitzer was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1960-1963) and Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (1963-1969).
