Commemorative Envelope signed: "A.C. McAuliffe", "Mark W.
Clark" and "Victor A. Armstrong/Brig. Gen. USMC", 6½x3½.
6-cent Marquette Explorer stamp affixed, postmarked aboard the USS
Columbus (CG-12), January 15, 1971. Built by Bethlehem Steel Co. in
Quincy, Mass., the ship was launched as USS Columbus CA-74 on November
30, 1944. Modernized from March 1959 to November 1962, it was re-commissioned as
CG-12 on December 1, 1962. The USS Columbus (CG-12) was decommissioned on
Jan 31, 1975. The USS Columbus CG-12, at 190 feet above the water line,
was the tallest of the three Albany Class guided missile cruisers, thus earning
her the nickname "The Tall Lady". General ANTHONY C. McAULIFFE
(1898-1975) held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge. He is
remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum: "Nuts!" General
MARK CLARK (1896-1984) commanded the landings at Salerno and Anzio
against the forces of Kesselring. Major General ARMSTRONG (1918-2010) was
Commander of the First Marine Brigade at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station,
Hawaii. Address label affixed in lower right corner. Lightly creased,
touching "m" in Armstrong. Fine condition.
