MARK W. CLARK.
Mark W. Clark sends a typed letter endorsing the policies of President Reagan.
Typed Letter signed: "Mark Clark", 8½x11. On letterhead of The Citadel Military College. Charleston, South Carolina, 1983 January 24. To Joseph F. Fawls, Port Washington, New York. In full: "Your letter of January 18 has been received, together with its inclosure, the letter from President Kennedy to General Hodges. [not included] I have looked up in the Register of Graduates of the United States Military Academy and find there was a H. C. Hodges, who is listed as a graduate, and checking on his identification number, it looks as though he belonged to the Class of 1851. The Register does not give details on classes before th4e Class of 1905. I also find listed in this book, a Hency C. Hodges, Jr., who's a graduate of USMA but his identification number indicates that he graduated in the Class of 1881. That's all the information I can furnish you; however, I suggest you write to the Register of Graduates, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY 10996 and I am sure they can furnish you with complete details. I agree with your statements regarding President Reagan. He's in one tough spot and unfortunately, he has too many politicians in Congress and elswehwere [sic] who are thinking more about their own re-election and their own well-being, than they are of their country. That poses an almost impossible situation, particularly during the sad economic situation which confronts our country. I support Mr. Reagan and admire his courage to do some of the things that should be done. He'd like to do more but if he expects to stay in four more years, and it will take that long to turn us around, he has to be pragmatic and appease at times. I know it hurts him to do it but that's the way democracy works. I am deeply disturbed over the security of our country. Yet, these same unqualified politicians whom I mentioned earlier in this letter, can only be reelected through the social programs, regardless of where the money comes from, and I guess the only place it can come from in large part, is at the expense of our security. All my best wishes, Sincerely." Accompanied by unsigned envelope to same addressee with Clark's printed return address. Mark Wayne Clark (1896-1984), who assumed command of the Fifth Army in North Africa in 1943 and commanded the Fifth Army in the invasion of Italy in 1944, got his fourth star in March 1945. He accepted the surrender of German forces in Italy and Austria and, from 1945 to 1947, was the U.S. High Commissioner in occupied Austria. In 1953, as Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command, he signed the military armistice between the U.N. Command and the North Korean Army and Chinese People's Volunteers in Korea. That year, he also began his 12 years of service as President of The Citadel. He is buried on the campus of The Citadel next to Mark Clark Hall. Fine condition.
