MARK W. CLARK
Mark W. Clark sends a typed letter of regret that he will not be able to attend a dinner.
Typed Letter signed: "Mark", 8x10½. On letterhead of the Army Field Forces, Office of the Chief, Fort Monroe, Virginia, 1949 December 13. To Mr. Julius Klein, Public Relations, Empire State Building, New York, New York. In full: "I have your letter of November 30 and sent word while I was on duty in Washington that I would be unable to accept your fine invitation to the dinner attended by Secretary Johnson on December 14. You were mighty kind to think of me and Mrs. Clark. I had been in Washington for two weeks on the General Officers Selection Board. Have just returned to my headquarters here in Fort Monroe and find my work staked up, which means I will be snowed under for some time. It would have been a great pleasure if we could have been with you. I hope our paths will cross before long. In the meantime, Mrs. Clark joins me in best wishes to you and yours for a Merry Christmas and a happy and successful New Year. Sincerely," Mark Wayne Clark (1896-1984), who assumed command of the Fifth Army in North Africa in 1943 and commanded the Fifth Army in the invasion of Italy in 1944, got his fourth star in March 1945. He accepted the surrender of German forces in Italy and Austria and, from 1945 to 1947, was the U.S. High Commissioner in occupied Austria. In 1953, as Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command, he signed the military armistice between the U.N. Command and the North Korean Army and Chinese People's Volunteers in Korea. That year, he also began his 12 years of service as President of The Citadel. He is buried on the campus of The Citadel next to Mark Clark Hall. Fold crease through signature. Half file holes at left margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
