MATTHEW B. RIDGWAY
The General who replaced MacArthur in Korea and Eisenhower in Europe signs a special cover that was postmarked on the U.S.S. Leyte during the Korean Conflict.
Special Cover signed: "M. B. Ridgway, Gen., USA, Rtd", 6½x3¾. Special Cover imprinted "Korea/1952", 3-cent Oregon Territory Centennial stamp affixed, postmarked U.S.S. Leyte, May 30, 1952 and U.S. Leyte (CV 32), New York, New York, May 30, 1952. Cachet pictures a dragon and an Oriental man and is captioned: "Confucius Say". Matthew Bunker Ridgway (1895-1993) planned and executed the Army's first major airborne assault in Sicily during WWII. In April 1951, he succeeded General of the Army Douglas MacArthur as Commander of United Nations forces in Korea and of allied occupying forces in Japan. In June 1952, Ridgway replaced General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. Ridgway served as Army Chief of Staff from 1953-1955. Lightly creased. Minor paper scuff at lower right margin from removal of mailing label. Pencil note (unknown hand) beneath cachet. Glue from flap has sealed dealer's card inside envelope. Overall, fair condition.
