MATTHEW RIDGWAY
Typed Letter signed in 1979, recommending two books written by him
Typed Letter signed: "M. B. Ridgway", 1 page, 7¼x10¼. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1979 January 12. On personal letterhead to Ben B. Braude, New York, N.Y., "Thank you for your interesting letter and your gracious reference to my service. I was privileged beyond words to have the opportunities which came to me in high command, particularly in combat in Europe and Asia. I have written two books which I believe you would find of interest. 'SOLDIER', Harper & Brothers (now Harper & Row, 10 East 53rd St., New York, N.Y.), now out of print, but a second edition published by the Greenwood Press, Westport, Conn., 06880, is probably available, if not in bookstores, then from the publisher. 'THE KOREAN WAR,' Doubleday & Co., New York, N.Y., 1967 is, I believe, still available in many bookstores. With all good wishes, Sincerely". Accompanied by original typed envelope.Matthew Bunker Ridgway (1895-1993) planned and executed the Army's first major airborne assault in Sicily during WWII. In April 1951, he succeeded General of the Army Douglas MacArthur as Commander of United Nations forces in Korea and of allied occupying forces in Japan. In June 1952, Ridgway replaced General of the Army Dwight D. Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. He served as Army Chief of Staff from 1953-1955. Top edge toned. Ink transfer above signature. Normal horizontal mailing folds. Fine condition.
