translated but concerns seeking a recommendation and going to Habana. Born in the Dominican
Republic, Maximo Gómez Y Báez served in the Dominican army against Haiti and
Spain. After settling in Cuba as a farmer, he joined insurgents during the revolution of
1868-1878, becoming Commander in Chief in 1870. In 1895, in the second Cuban
revolution, Gómez y Báez was General in Chief of Cuban forces. In the Spanish-American
War, he placed his troops at the disposal of the U.S. Army. In 1902, he declined to be a
considered for the presidency of Cuba. Tanned, lined page. Ink was not dry when the letter
was folded, resulting in light ink transfer. Overall fine condition.
