Amendola, Jr., depicting the French pioneer aircraft flying over the Statue of Liberty. In World War II, General Maxwell D. Taylor commanded the 101st Airborne Division that dropped into Normandy, France behind Utah Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. After the war, he served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1955-1959), Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1962-1964) and U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam (1964-1965).
