Written the day the U.S. flag was raised atop Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima, the General sends an original insignia patch of the 15th Air Force.
TLS: "N.F. Twining", 1p, 8x10½. Fifteenth Air Force, Office of the Commanding General, APO 520, 1945 February 23. To Bernard Mandel, Toronto, Canada. In full: "As requested in your letter of 25 January, I am inclosing an insignia of the Fifteenth Air Force. A photograph is being forwarded under separate cover." Creased. Overall, fine condition. Present is the circular blue insignia, 2¾-inch diameter, embroidered in red, white and gold. The design is the number "15" above a red circle within a winged white star. Fine condition. General Twining was Chief of Staff of Army forces in the South Pacific. In January 1944, he succeeded General James H. Doolittle as Commander of the Fifteenth Air Force. Flying from bases in southern Italy, the Fifteenth provided support for General Mark Clark's Fifth Army on the ground, flew strategic missions into Germany, Austria and the Balkans, and, in August 1944, provided air cover for the Seventh Army's landing in southern France. In August 1945, General Twining took command of the Twentieth Air Force in the Pacific; the Twentieth bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Two items.
