OMAR BRADLEY, SIDNEY R. YATES and BETTYE MIMS DANOFF
Album leaf signed by a 5-star general, a veteran Congressman, and a founder of the LPGA
Signatures: "Omar Bradley", "Sidney R. Yates" and on verso "Bettye Mims White", all in pencil. 4¾x2½ album leaf. OMAR NELSON BRADLEY (1893-1981) took command of the First Army in January 1944, which landed at Utah and Omaha beaches, Normandy, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. In August 1944, he became the Commander of the 12th Army Group, the largest force ever commanded on the field. On September 20, 1950, Bradley was promoted to Five-Star General of the Army. He served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1949-1953. SIDNEY RICHARD YATES (1909-2000), an Illinois Democrat, represented lakefront wards of Chicago in the US House from 1949-1963 and 1965-1999, losing a bid to unseat US Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen in 1962. For 20 years he chaired the Appropriations Committee's Interior Subcommittee, supporting environmental programs and the National Endowment for the Arts. BETTYE MIMS DANOFF, who has signed here with a previous married name of White, was one of the 11 founders of the Ladies' Professional Golf Association in 1950. That same year, she notched two other road marks: snapping Babe Zaharias' string of 17 consecutive victories by defeating her in match play at the Texas Open; and being (along with Alice Bauer) the first pro golfer to take her kids along on tour. She retired from competition in the late 1950s. Lightly toned. Top edge lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
