TLS: "Omar N. Bradley" as General of the Army, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1965 July 19. On his official letterhead, which is imprinted with five stars, to Robert P. Cassell, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for your letter of July 13 inviting me to be your banquet speaker on Friday evening, August 6th, during the annual convention of The Association of Regular Army Sergeants. While I am honored by your invitation, it is not possible for me to accept. Mrs. Bradley and I are leaving for Europe on August 3rd and will not return until the 18th. I did very well at Charles Town the night I saw you there!" With original typed, stamped mailing envelope. Charles Town Race Track (West Virginia) is about 70 miles from Washington, D.C. Lieutenant General Omar Nelson Bradley (1893-1981) took command of the First Army in January 1944, which, constituting the Allied right wing, landed at Utah and Omaha beaches, Normandy, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. In August 1944, he became the Commander of the 12th Army Group, the largest force ever commanded on the field. In 1950, Bradley was promoted to Five-Star General of the Army. He served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1949-1953. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold underlines signature. Stained at upper left corner and left blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
