OMAR N. BRADLEY. TLS: "Omar", 1p, 7x9. No place, 1965
December 15. To Admiral Lewis Strauss., Brandy Station, Virginia. In full:
"Thank you very much for the kind letter expressing your own and Mrs.
Strauss' sympathy in the loss of my wife. Everything happened so suddenly
that it is difficult to adjust to the realization that she has gone. However,
her illness was brief and she did not suffer, and we find consolation in
that. There is a definite measure of comfort also in the concern of friends
in this sad hour, and I deeply appreciate your thinking of me." During World
War II, LEWIS STRAUSS was adviser to Navy Undersecretary James Forrestal,
directing the development of the radar proximity fuse. In 1945, he was promoted
to the rank of Rear Admiral by President Truman. Strauss served on the Atomic
Energy Commission from 1946-1950 and its chairman from 1953-1958. Lieutenant
OMAR N. BRADLEY had married Mary Quayle (1892-1965) in 1916.
Penciled check mark and "F" in upper left (unknown hand). Fine condition.
