He signed this check for $128, drawn on a Chicago bank, in 1871.
Check signed: "P. H. Sheridan/USA", 7¼x2½. Chicago, Illinois, 1871 November 18. Check filled out in another hand, drawn on Union National Bank, payable to Major Bell or order ("bearer" has been crossed out), for $128. Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888), who graduated from West Point in 1853, became a distinguished Union General who saw action at Stones River, Chickamauga, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. Known for making his famous ride from Winchester to rally his troops after their repulse at Cedar Creek, Sheridan's deployment of his forces across the Confederate line of retreat from Appomattox was instrumental in forcing Lee's surrender to Grant. He was in charge of the Gulf military region and department (1866-1867). In August 1867, Sheridan was transferred to the Department of the Missouri, charged with pacification of the Plains Indians. He waged this campaign ferociously and - for the most part - successfully - re-employing his Shenandoah Valley strategy of depriving the enemy of food stores. However, Sheridan strongly denied ever making the statement, "The only good Indian is a dead Indian." In November 1883, Sheridan was named Commander in Chief of the Army and, in June 1888, he was commissioned a (4-star) General by Congress. Small processing hole in middle. Lightly soiled and creased. Left edge ragged. 2-cent stamp affixed to upper left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
