Engraving unsigned, 2½x4 affixed to slightly larger card. A carte de visite.
Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888), who graduated from West Point in 1853, became a
distinguished Union General who saw action at Stones River, Chickamauga,
Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. Known for making his famous ride
from Winchester to rally his troops after their repulse at Cedar Creek,
Sheridan's deployment of his forces across the Confederate line of retreat
from Appomattox was instrumental in forcing Lee's surrender to Grant. From July
17-August 15, 1866, he was in charge of the military division of the Gulf. A
department for the Gulf was then created, which he ran until March 1867. In
November 1883, Sheridan was named Commander in Chief of the Army and, in
June 1888, he was commissioned a General by Congress. Diagonal crease at
upper left corner. Edges and corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine
condition.
