U.S., Washington, D.C., 1884 December 29. To Major William H. Mills,
Washington. Because of "a slight indisposition which confines me to the house
temporarily", General Sheridan must "withdraw my
acceptance of the polite invitation to dine with the Union
Soldiers...." During the Civil War, Sheridan saw action at Chickamauga,
the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor, making his famous ride from
Winchester to rally his troops after their repulse at Cedar Creek in 1864.
Lightly soiled at upper margin and verso of integral leaf. Light show through of
ink. Fine condition.
