PIERRE G.T. BEAUREGARD
Pierre G. T. Beauregard fills out and signs a check for $58.88 to pay Louis Barnett.
Partly Printed Check signed: "G.T. Beauregard", 8¼x2¾. New Orleans, 1880 August 10. Two-cent Internal Revenue stamp affixed at upper right corner. Check No. 73, drawn on the Mutual National Bank, payable to Louis Barnett for $58.88. Beauregard has filled out and signed the check. Written and signed after the Civil War years. The former Confederate General at this time was involved in several projects: he was the President of the New Orleans, Jackson & Mississippi Railway; Manager of the Louisiana lottery; in 1888, he became Commissioner of Public Works for the City of New Orleans and served as Adjutant-General of Louisiana. A former West Point graduate, Beauregard was Superintendent of that college for less than a week when he declared his intent to follow his native Louisiana should it secede. He resigned his Captain's commission in February of 1861 to become Brigadier General in the CSA. On April 2, he gave the order for firing on Fort Sumter, beginning the Civil War. He took command of the Army of Tennessee when General A.S. Johnston was mortally wounded at Shiloh. He was known as a great military strategist and one of the best Generals in the CSA. Pinched bank cancellation just touches the "T" in signature (all paper intact). Cancellation stamp touches the top of "Beaur". Fine condition..
