GENERAL ROBERT H. BARROW - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 11/06/1981 - HFSID 274462

ROBERT H. BARROW. TLS: "R.H. Barrow" as General, U.S. Marine Corps and Commandant of the Marine Corps, 2p, 7x8½, separate sheets. No place, 1981 November 6. On sheet imprinted with the Marine Commandant flag at upper margin to Mr. Joseph Kover, Flushing, New York. In full: "I appreciate your recent letter requesting a personal experience of mine while a member of the Boy Scouts. Unfortunately, there were no opportunities to participate in the Boy Scouts in the rural community where I grew up and I cannot talk from personal experience about the many benefits of scouting. I can say, however, from personal observation of scouts and my contact with people who were once a part of this venerable organization, that the scouting experience affords young Americans the chance to learn and put into practice the meaning of citizenship in the home, community and nation. I applaud your efforts in providing the young boys in your community the opportunity to experience scouting and extend my best wishes for your continued success. Sincerely". Robert H. Barrow (born in 1923 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana) was the 27th Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1979 until his retirement in 1983. Over his 41-year military career, Barrow served in three wars, WWII (for which he received a Bronze Star Medal with Combat V), the Korean Conflict (awarded the Navy Cross) and the Vietnam War (received the Army Distinguished Service Cross for heroism during Operation Dewey Canyon). Barrow, who received a number of other honors, was appointed to the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board by President Ronald Reagan following his retirement from the military. Slightly creased with fold, not at signature. Light paper clip impressions at upper right blank margins. Fine condition.
