GENERAL ROBERTO FIERRO VILLALOBOS
The pioneer Mexican aviator and military hero signs a Mexican FDC commemorating the Wright brothers first flight.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Fierro Villalobos", 6½x3¾. FDC observing the 75th anniversary of the Wright brothers' flight at Kittyhawk, postmarked Mexico Federal District, December 17, 1978, Mexican 1.60 peso air mail stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Mexican Air Force General (Roberto) Fierro Villalobos (1897-1985) joined the newly formed Mexican Air Force in 1920. Already a military veteran of cavalry engagements in the civil wars of the 1910s, Villalobos flew 52 combat missions in the service of the government of President Adolfo Huerta during the 1920s, fighting against various insurgent forces. He conducted bombing and strafing missions, and survived having his plane shot down in hostile territory. Fierro Villalobos was a civil aviation pioneer as well. In 1930, he set a new record for the fastest non-stop flight from New York to Mexico (13 hours). He retired from active military service in 1972. The international airport in Chihuahua is named in his honor. Fine condition.
