First Day of Issue. General Sir Robert Forbes Adam (1885-1982)fought in France and Italy during World War I, rising to the rank of major and winning DSO and OBE honors. He occupied increasingly important staff positions in the interwar period. As Commander of III Corps in France in 1940, Adam played a key role in organizing the defense of the Dunkirk perimeter, permitting most of the British army to escape across the Channel in good order. In June 1941, he was appointed Adjutant General, responsible for the British Army's organization and administration. He clashed with Prime Minister Churchill, who though Adam's reforms to radical and sought to have him reassigned, but with the support of Alan Brooke, Chief of the Imperial General Staff, he filled this important role capably through the end of the war.
