TIMOTHY PICKERING
Signed engraving of himself, accompanied by an unsigned engraving of Mrs. Pickering
Engraving signed: "Timothy Pickering". Sepia. 8¼ x 11 overall. 5 x 7½ image. Two surfaces. Accompanied by unsigned engraving of Mrs. Timothy Pickering, from a painted portrait by Stuart. Thomas Pickering (1745-1829) raised and led a Massachusetts regiment during the Revolutionary War, and was made Adjutant General of the Continental Army in 1777. He served under Presidents Washington (Postmaster General, 1791-1795; Secretary of War, 1795-1796; Secretary of State, 1795-1797) and Adams (Secretary of State, 1797-1800). During the Adams administration, Pickering was instrumental in shoring up America's defenses and denouncing French influence in American politics, but his strong opposition to Adams' successful efforts to avoid war with France led to his dismissal from the Cabinet on May 12, 1800. A Federalist, Pickering represented Massachusetts in the US Senate (1803-1811) and House (1813-1817). Rebecca Pickering was married to Timothy from 1776 until her death in 1828. Soiled around outer margin. Creased in lower right corner. Faint adhesive show through on verso. Otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned engraving. Fine condition.
