January 2. On "Office of Inspector of Contract Arms" stationery to Howes
Norris, Springfield, Mass. In part: "On the 22nd of November I
advised Mr. Remington at Middletown that the carbines furnished to Major Laidley
Captains Crispin & Mordecai, would be entered on the next certificates sent
here for 1000 Remington Carbines and to lessen the number of such vouchers
sent to the Ordinance office give or Mr. Remington will please make the entry as
required...." At the bottom is an ANS: "Howes Norris". In
full: "The above explains itself - please do the needful & destroy
the Vouchers I send." William A. Thornton (1803-1866) commanded the
Watervliet Arsenal during the Civil War. Mr. Remington was Philo
Remington, President of E. Remington & Sons, gun manufacturers, from
1865 to his death in 1889. Shaded in areas. Folds not at signature. 2-inch
separation at blank horizontal fold. Lightly stained. Nicked top edge.
