WILLIAM C. WESTMORELAND
7x5 image of an older Westmoreland being applauded by other members of a panel
Photograph signed: "W. C. Westmoreland". B/w, 7x5. William Childs Westmoreland (1914-2005), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). US forces never suffered a military defeat during Westmoreland's tenure there, but his "search and destroy" strategy of seeking out enemy forces in remote regions instead of concentrating on protection of heavily populated areas, drew criticism as an "attrition" strategy too costly in American lives. Westmoreland served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervising the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
