President Johnson recalled Westmoreland after he successfully stopped the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive in 1968. William Childs Westmoreland (1914-2005), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Lightly creased. Lower left edge and corner torn away, nicked at upper left edge, removing the "M" in May. Stamp at upper banner headline. Overall, fine condition.
