WILLIAM C. WESTMORELAND. Magazine Cover signed: "W.C. Westmoreland". Color, 7½x11. Cover of "Newsweek" magazine, May 8, 1967 issue. Cover story: "THE HOME-FRONT WAR". Photograph of Westmoreland is captioned: "General Westmoreland/Before Congress". General Westmoreland, who took command in Vietnam in June 1964, was instrumental in raising the level of U.S. forces deployed in Vietnam and in developing the strategies implemented in the region. President Johnson recalled Westmoreland after he successfully stopped the North Vietnamese Tet Offensive in 1968. William Childs Westmoreland (1914-2005), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Lightly creased. Lower left edge and corner torn away, nicked at upper left edge, removing the "M" in May. Stamp at upper banner headline. Overall, fine condition.
