In full: "Word of your mother's passing has just reached me, and I want you to know that I share your heaviness of heart at this difficult time. I hope that the kind thoughts of all who were privileged to know your mother during her long and fruitful life will comfort you in your loss. With heartfelt sympathy. Sincerely". William Childs Westmoreland (1914-2005), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Slightly creased with mid-horizontal fold, not at signature. Fine condition.
