William Westmoreland signed this typed letter on letterhead of the Governor of South Carolina to an autograph hunter in 1973.
Typed letter signed "W.C. Westmoreland". 1 page, 6x9, on personalized letterhead of John C. West, Governor of the State of South Carolina. July 23, 1973. Addressed to Mr. Eddie Sousa, South Lake Tahoe, California. In full: "Dear Mr. Sousa: Thank you for your kind letter of July 11th. It is my pleasure to forward a photograph to add to your impressive collection. With best wishes for your continued success, Sincerely W. C. Westmorland". Westmoreland (1914-2005, born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Paper clip impressions and rust stains in top left corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
