Staple holes at upper left blank corner, 2 file holes at blank left margin. Fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned, 9½x4 envelope, printed "Department of the Army/Official Business" with typed address of Miss Barbara L. Stephens, Los Angeles, and with General Westmoreland's typed return address as MACV Commander, APO San Francisco, postmarked US Air Force Postal Service, October 29, 1966. Lightly soiled. Staple and binder holes at bottom edge. William Childs Westmoreland (1914-2005), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Two items.
