William Westmoreland signed this thank you letter on U. S. Army Chief of Staff stationery in 1968, less than a month after the end of the Tet Offensive.
Typed letter signed "W.C. Westmoreland". 1 page, 7x7¾, on United States Army Chief of Staff stationery. Oct. 14, 1968. Addressed to Benjamin Kohn, Silver Spring, Maryland. In full: "Your cheering card has brightened my day. I am grateful for your good wishes and your thoughtfulness. Sincerely, W. C. WESTMORELAND General, United States Army Chief of Staff". Westmoreland (1914-2005, born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina), a veteran of WWII, was Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (1960-1963) and Commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and United States Army, Vietnam, at the peak of the Vietnam War (1964-1968). Westmoreland, who then served as Army Chief of Staff (1968-1972), supervised the Army's disengagement from Vietnam and the transition from the draft to an all-volunteer army. Lightly toned and creased. Random ink marks. Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
