WILLIAM W. MOMYER
Color photograph of the 4-star general in his uniform sitting at his desk
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mr. Stanhope/Good luck to/you./William W. Momyer/General USAF". Color, 8x10. William Wallace Momyer (1916-2012) commanded the 33rd Fighter Group in North Africa and Italy during World War II, earning ace status with 8 kills, including 4 kills in one day in North Africa when he single-handedly took on 14 Stuka dive bombers escorted by fighters. Momyer headed the 8th Fighter Bomber Wing during the Korean conflict, and the 7th Air Force in Vietnam. He took command of the Tactical Air Command in August 1968. Momyer, the author of a major work on air power in three wars, was no stranger to controversy, including very poor relations with Generals Benjamin O. Davis and Chuck Yeager (whose promotion he reportedly opposed). Corners creased in margin area. Minor surface scratches - not visible head on. Otherwise, fine condition.
