GENEVIEVE TAGGARD
The poet who earned teaching positions at Mount Holyoke College,
Bennington College, and Sarah Lawrence College signed this card in iron gall
ink
Signature: “Genevieve Taggard” in iron gall ink. 5x3. Genevieve Taggard
(1894-1948) was an American poet who embraced political views that
gradually shifted into socialism. She attended the University of California,
Berkeley, and graduated in 1919. She promptly moved to New York City,
founding journal The Measure with Maxwell Anderson. While in New York City
and editing The Measure, she taught at Mount Holyoke College from 1929 to
1930. It was at this time that her political views became more prominent; this
shift can be attributed to the hardship of the Great Depression experienced
by millions in the United States at the time. She taught at Sarah Lawrence
College from 1934-1947, during which time she produced her most social
reform-conscious publications. Her anthologies include For Eager Lovers
(1922), Words for the Chisel (1926), and Long View (1942). Perhaps her most
famous poem is Interior, which clearly expresses her perception of the class
warfare in the United States at the time it was published in 1935. Toned.
Writing on verso in unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
